Larry Ronald Hoffman, 88

Larry Ronald Hoffman, aged 88, passed away on July 31, 2024, in Georgetown, Texas. Born on May 12, 1936, in Sigourney, Iowa, Larry grew up in a nurturing environment that sparked a lifelong passion for learning and nature.

Larry received his early education at Sigourney High School before earning a Bachelor's degree from Iowa State College at Ames and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. His academic journey led to a distinguished career as a Professor of Phycology at the University of Illinois. His contributions to the field extended beyond teaching; Larry was an active officer in the Phycological Society of America and the Botanical Society of America, where he influenced both peers and students alike.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry had many interests. He was an avid hiker, cross-country skier, canoeist and camper, often exploring the mountains and woods with his family. His love of research, history and craftsmanship led him to become a refinisher and dealer in antique furniture, clocks, and tools. He was particularly renowned for his handcrafted Shaker-style wood boxes that he created by the hundreds. Larry also pursued genealogy and photography, documenting and cherishing family milestones and the beauty of nature.

Larry is survived by the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Margaret; his children, Jennifer (Toby), Michael (Emily), and Christopher (Denise); and his grandsons, Curtis (Adrian), Drew, and Sawyer. His dedication to learning, researching and the natural world leaves an indelible mark on his family and the many lives he touched.

Memorial donations can be made to The Nature Conservancy at www.nature.org/en-us/membership-and-giving/donate-to-our-mission/other-w..., a cause that was close to Larry's heart.
