Marie Helen Sauer was born on March 21, 1926, to Edwin and Ethel Thomas Ross at Bancroft, MO. She attended school at Thornburg and What Cheer. On September 6, 1941, Marie was united in marriage to Dale Edwin Sauer at Lancaster, MO. They spent most of their married life in Keokuk County where they farmed and raised their five children: Leslie, Dave, Larry, Marjorie and Peggy. Marie and Dale enjoyed their life together and spent hours square dancing every Saturday night in the winter and camping and fishing in the summer. Marie worked as a homemaker for the county and at her own home. She also worked at the Town House in Sigourney and at Niswanders’ Restaurant. Marie was also a nurse’s aide in the Mahaska Hospital. She also helped her husband in the construction of three homes.
Marie worked hard and played hard. She loved to ride horses and play cards with neighbors. She belonged to the Delta Methodist Church, Boat Club, Square Dance groups, and enjoyed dancing at the Moose Lodge, Eagles, and different VA’s. They enjoyed family vacations with their family but always took one vacation a year with just the two of them. She had a great sense of humor and even showed a little orneriness.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; grandson, John Sauer; brother, George Ross; sisters, Gladys Souer and Ruth Pierce.
Marie is survived by her children: Leslie (Carol) Sauer, Dave (Sharen) Sauer, Larry (Barb) Sauer, Marjorie (Gene) Maule and Peggy (Gary) Rinderknecht; 11 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 20 great great grandchildren; her sister, Ethel Roach; as well as many other relatives and friends.
