Marion Elliott

1931-2021

Marion Elliott, 89 of Montezuma passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at his home in Montezuma surrounded by his family. Funeral services began at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2021 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Burial with military rites will be held in the Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River. Visitation began after 12 p.m. Friday, April 2 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family to greet friends and relatives from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Morrison-Schrader American Legion Post No. 296 or the Deep River Auxiliary Unit 296. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

Marion Irvin Elliott, the son of Charles and Carrie (Thompson) Elliott, was born on May 19, 1931 in Sigourney. He attended Sigourney High School and enjoyed their annual reunions. In January of 1951, Marion enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. While serving his country, Marion served in Korea for ten months and was involved in erecting several buildings in three different locations throughout Korea. He was honorably discharged in May of 1952 and was an active reserve until 1958. On Nov. 13, 1955, Marion was united in marriage to Frances Greene at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Marion worked for FA Moser Contractors from 1948 to 1971 taking a couple years off during the war to serve his country. He then partnered with Dorm Merryfield to create and run Mer-El Incorporated from 1971 to 1977. Following their closure in 1977, Marion and Frances started their own business, MIE Inc. traveling around Iowa installing concrete box culverts. They sold their equipment and retired in 1994.

Marion enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and writing poetry. His biggest joy was his family and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s school events and activities through the years. Marion attended Union Mills Christian Church and most recently Jackson Church of Christ in Montezuma. He was also a member of the Associated General Contractors (AGC), a member of the Marine Corps. Engineers and a 54-year member of the Morrison-Schrader American Legion Post No. 296 in Deep River.

His legacy will be cherished by his wife of 65 years, Frances Elliott of Montezuma; his children, Charla Elliott of Venice, Florida, Lyndon (Lolita) Elliott of Iowa City, Loren (Teresa) Elliott of Montezuma, Lance (Sara) Elliott of Edina, Minn. and Carrie (Brian) Stockman of Montezuma; 18 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; a brother, James (Laurel) Elliott of Cedar Falls and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Marion was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathy Miller; a grandson, Ryan Elliott and several siblings, Lucile Rogers, Margery Van Patten, Charles Elliott, David Elliott, Bernice Martin, Martha Green and Dortha Dewberry.
