1953-2021

HAYESVILLE- Mary Bird, age 67, of Hayesville, died Monday, June 7, 2021, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Mary was born June 22, 1953, in Sigourney, to Stanley and Dorothy (Roberts) Peiffer and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1971.  On June 25, 1971, she married Larry Bird at the Hayesville Community Church.  The couple lived in Rose Hill for 10 years before moving to Hayesville.  Mary was a Teacher’s Aide at the school for several years then became a stay-at-home grandma for her grandchildren until they went to school.  She then did wedding dress alterations for Matthew Christopher for 14 years, retiring in 2017.  Mary continued to alter prom dresses and dance costumes until her health prohibited it.  She enjoyed reading, cross stitch, sewing, quilting, especially making quilts of valor, traveling and going on motorcycle rides.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years: Larry; daughter: Angel (Johnny) Dale of Sigourney; sons: Larry, Jr. of Oskaloosa and Shawn (Melissa) Bird of Hayesville; five grandchildren: Johnny Dale, Jr., Allyson (Justin Craig) Bird, Caleigh Dale, Samantha (Noah) Boender and Gavin Bird; two great grandchildren: Jayla Craig and Jackson Boender and two sisters: Essie Meyer of Hayesville and Vida Pilkington of Belle Plaine.  She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson: Brian Bird; brother: Stanley Peiffer; in-laws: Harold and Hazel Bird; nieces: Stephanie and Tasha Meyer in infancy and nephew: Ryan Meyer.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2021, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney, with Pastors Vince Homan and Jaci Jarmes officiating.  It will also be livestreamed on the Powell Funeral Home facebook page. Burial will be at Pennington Cemetery in rural Sigourney.  Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney.  

A memorial fund has been established for Hospice or Quilts of Valor.  Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Mary and her family.  Tributes may be made at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
