SIGOURNEY – The Christian Church of Sigourney has opened a new food pantry, called the Christian Cupboard. “There’s a huge need in this area,” said Pastor Dan Glandon. “A huge need of underserved people that, for one reason or another, you know job condition, just whatever’s going on, that they need a boost. They just need to get up and over a hump sometimes, to be able to take some relief off their budget and help feed their family.”

The food pantry will be open from 8:00 a.m. to noon, Monday-Thursday. The pantry can be accessed via the exterior staircase on the south side of the church and is located in the old pastor’s office. The pantry can be opened for handicapped people or on other days, if you call ahead at 641-622-2151. The church is planning to partner with Iowa Food Bank, to acquire cheaper food and serve more people. The pantry is in need of donations of food or money to purchase food. Glandon noted that the three pictured shelves are only enough food for a week and a half. There are plans to add more shelves and refrigeration.

“We will definitely be looking for people that want a little bit of help,” said Glandon. “And of course we share the word of God with them, if they want to listen. If they come in and all they want is food, we’re good with that also. Anything we can do to help.”

“I think that, anytime people have need, we need to do anything we can do to serve them,” said church elder Jill Moore. “So I’m really thrilled that Dan has the knowledge and knows how to find stuff. And I know I think it’s great. I think everybody does. We’re all excited that we could have this.”

“This is ground level,” said Glandon. “We’re trying to get awareness in the community, to where the needs of the community can actually help build this.  The more that we can help other people, the better.”

The christian church also holds a family every other week and bible study throughout the week. A women’s retreat, named Prayer Beyond Amen, is planned for April 27.
