NM Teams Sweep Iowa Valley
MARENGO – North Mahaska’s basketball teams got back in the saddle Jan. 5 and made a clean sweep of the Tigers of Iowa Valley. The girls won 72-42 while the boys topped the Tigers 64-38.
In the girls’ contest, the game was a tight battle through the first half with NM holding a 31-27 halftime edge. The Warhawks (6-1, 5-1) exploded for a 19-7 run in the third period and 22-8 in the final frame to secure the victory.
Junior Layla Hargis had another solid night scoring 26 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Junior Addie Schilling added 18 points and five rebounds and Kaitlyn VanDonselaar finished with 10 points, four steals and three assists. Breanna Fogle chipped in eight points and Madison McKay scored six. Schilling was credited with seven assist and four steals.
North Mahaska’s boys were led by a trio in double figures. Sophomores Nash Smith (18) and Braden Steel (13) led the scoring with senior Blake Readshaw chipping in 12. Junior Sam Terpstra and senior Addy Bollman contributed six and five points respectively.
Steel and Smith led the rebounding with 14 and 11 respectively. Smith also doled out three assists and blocked two shots.
NM improves to 7-1 overall and 7-0 in South Iowa Cedar League play. IV falls to 7-3 overall. North Mahaska will host Keota Friday in a girl-boy doubleheader at 6 p.m.
