SIGOURNEY – Sigourney-Keota varsity soccer came away with a convincing win during their first-round district playoff game on May 15. It rained in the morning but by the early evening game time it was pleasantly warm, the sky was overcast, and the winds were calm for the first time this spring soccer season as S-K took on Centerville during the postseason district playoff opener in Donnellson. Ty Shafranek kicked off the S-K scoring run early in the first half. Freshman Gavin Khali sailed a crossing shot to the far post from the right flank to make the score 2-0 and Carter Wyatt added a third S-K goal before halftime. S-K was forced to play a man down for the remainder of the game after an S-K player received a red card with just minutes left in the first half. The dominant team remained S-K, even playing a man down, as Ty Shafranek added two more goals in the second half. S-K’s defense held Centerville scoreless making the final score 5-0. “We got the job done. Wasn’t our best game but playing a man down we were still able to score and advance to the next round,” stated S-K head coach Dillon Maass. He added, “To win our first playoff game in only the 2nd year is quite the accomplishment but we aren’t done yet.” S-K moves on to play West Branch on the road on May 22.
