Savages Boys Golf Secure SICL Title
OSKALOOSA—On April 30, the Boys SICL Conference Tournament was held at Elmhurst Country Club in Oskaloosa. The Sigourney Savages took home first place with an aggregate score of 336.
The Savages were once again led by sophomore Solon Yates, as he finished as the runner-up with a score of 76. Cain Weber tallied an 85, and 11th place finish. Josh Wyatt placed 17th with an 87, and Ike Molyneux ended his day in 19th with an 88.
The Savage team is young with Brock Alderson being the only senior on the roster. Sigourney Head Coach Zach Tremmel described winning the conference title with a young roster with, “The future is pretty bright with five coming back. The good thing about this group is that they play golf nonstop. They live on the golf course, and that is what it takes to be good. They love the game. They spend all day on the course, and it is starting to show.”
The Savages have been led by sophomore Solon Yates, who is 23rd in the state with a low score of 36 in nine holes and 12st in the state in low score of 18 holes with a 76. Coach Tremmel spoke on the strides that Yates has made with, “Any good golf team you have that guy at the top that you can rely on to score in the 30s. He did that again for us, and set the tone for us. We were able to rally around him and get those four scores that we have been lacking all year.”
“We have tried to go more towards the 18 hole meets. We went to Oksy last week and played mainly all 3A schools. We got 10th out of 16, but I thought we played well. There are probably six teams there that will be state tournament teams in Class 3A and 2A, so we were able to see some good golfers. That is just experience that we gained. The more you put yourself in these situations, the more comfortable you get,” explained Coach Tremmel on the confidence gained from his team from playing the Oskaloosa Invitational at Elmhurst Country Club the week prior to the SICL Tournament.
The Savages head to North Cedar on May 8 for Sectionals. Coach Tremmel spoke on the team’s goals as the season wraps up as, “Our main goal is to make sure we get through. Just looking at the teams, I think we have a good chance to win it. Our main goal as a team is to get through it, and move on to districts as a team.”
The Keota Eagles finished in third place with a team score of 344. Junior Billie Kindred led the charge with an 80 for a sixth place finish. Cole Kindred was right behind his brother in seventh place with an 81. Sawyer Stout wrapped up his day with an 85 in 13th, while Tanner Waterhouse tallied a 98 for a finish in 30th.
The English Valleys Bears tallied an aggregate score of 358 for a sixth place finish. The Bears were led by junior Gage Heyne, who shot a 81 for an eighth place finish. Eli Marsh was right behind with an 84 for a ninth place finish. Tyler Lortz finished his day in 25th with a 92, while Luke Moore tallied a 101 for a 35th place finish.
The Sigourney Savages will be returning to action on May 8 for the 2024 Sectionals at 3/30 Club in North Cedar.
The Keota Eagles head to Meadowview Golf and Country Club in Springville for the Sectionals.
Lastly, the English Valleys Bears send off to New London for their Sectionals at Deerwood Golf.
