SIGOURNEY—The Sigourney Savages softball team hosted the Wilton Beavers for a non-conference matchup on June 20. The Savages fell to the Beavers in both games, first by a score of 1-0 then a score of 11-3.

Both teams came into the game bearing a top ten ranking in their respective classes. Sigourney is ranked 10th in Class 1A, while the Beavers sit at 8th in Class 2A.

The first game was a pitching duel from the get-go. Carly Goodwin and Wilton’s Grace Madlock were both locked in from the first inning. Goodwin finished her day with seven innings pitched, no earned runs on one hit and 13 strikeouts, Madlock went seven innings as well with no earned runs on three hits and nine strikeouts.

The Savages had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth with runners on second and third. Josephine Moore stepped up, and ripped a ball into left centerfield. Audra Cross, the Wilton center fielder, made a spectacular diving catch that took two runs off the boards for the Savages.

In the next half inning, the Beavers took a 1-0 lead, and held onto it en route to the victory.

The game commenced with three Savage runs in the first inning. Kenzi VanDenHueval knocked in a pair of runners, while Josephine Moore also tallied an RBI in the inning.

The Beavers went on to outscore the Savages 11-0 for the remainder of the game.

The Savages fall to 16-4 on the season, and will return to action on June 21, when they visit the English Valleys Bears. The Savages will look to wrap up a SICL conference title with a victory over the Bears.
