CARROLL—On July 22, the Sigourney Savages made the trip to Merchants Park for a matchup against the Lynnville-Sully Hawks. The Savages fell to the Hawks by a final score of 2-0.

The Hawks struck early due to back to back walks from junior pitcher Caden Clarahan. Lynnville-Sully would then bring the runner from second base home with a single. This would be the only hit that Clarahan gave up before the sixth inning.

Sigourney Head Coach Lee Crawford spoke on his pitchers performance as, “He settled down and started dealing. Probably one of his best outings to throw 84 pitches in seven innings. He is one of the best pitchers in the state.”

The pitching battle between Caden Clarahan and Lynnville-Sully’s Lucas Sieck ensued. Through five innings, both teams managed to only tally three total hits. The Hawks had the advantage because their one hit came with a runner on second base.

Lynnville-Sully added one more in the sixth inning to push their lead to 2-0.

Sigourney had a couple of chances to bring runners home, but could never cash in. The closest opportunity was an Issac Bruns’ foul ball that was a couple of feet away from dropping fair. If the ball landed fair, Bruns could’ve tied the game at one. Nevertheless, the Savages offense was stifled and were unable to score a run.

After the game, Sigourney Head Coach Lee Crawford spoke on what he saw from his team with, “Just like the whole season, we are all fighters. We just couldn’t get the hit we needed to break things open for us. We had a couple windows, where we could’ve scored. Lynnville made the plays they needed to, and we could not take advantage of our opportunities.”

Despite the loss, Coach Crawford held his head high for his team. “It’s huge. We just told them, ‘It may be the first, but it won’t be the last. We want to get back here again. Hopefully all our dudes got a taste of it, and know what it takes to get here.”

The Savages wrap up the season with a SICL-East division championship, and their first state tournament appearance in program history. Their final record for the 2024 season is 21-5.
