SIGOURNEY—On June 5, the Sigourney Savages hosted the Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders for the second round of the Class 1A-Region 8 bracket. The Savages stomped the Crusaders by a final score of 9-0.

The Savage offense quickly put up five runs in the first three innings, and then added four more in the fifth and sixth innings. The offense had three athletes tally two RBIs on the day: Carly Goodwin, Rain Barthelman and Courtney Hemsley. Josephine Moore, Kenzi VanDenHueval and Macy Fisch also knocked in a run.

Carly Goodwin got the start from the bump, and finished her day with seven innings pitched, no earned runs on two hits and 13 strikeouts. Goodwin spoke on the performance with, “It feels good. We know we have a couple of good games coming up with whoever wins the Wapello and Highland matchup. I think getting our confidence up, and keeping the season high into the postseason high.”

Goodwin went on to highlight the offensive explosion from her team with, “I think tonight it really showed we can do a situational hitter. When runners are on, we need to bring them in. I think we did that almost every single time a runner was on. Not only getting hits for our team, but also people came through. People who have been struggling a little bit got some hits, and built up their confidence for these next postseason games.”

The Savages advance to the third round of the Class 1A-Region 8 bracket, and will host the Wapello Arrows on July 7. The winner of the game will advance to the regional championship, and get a chance to punch their ticket to Fort Dodge.
