Sigourney senior Carly Goodwin concluded her final season in a Sigourney girls’ basketball jersey with a selection to the Southeast All-District and Region 3 All-Region Teams.

Goodwin described what it meant to earn these honors in her senior season with, “It was kind of sad seeing the season come to an end. It is always hard to see the season end as a senior. Getting those postseason honors is something that I appreciate as an athlete. I realize how much it means, and how much of an accomplishment it is. So, it is nice to have those to go off on a high note in my senior season.”

Goodwin ended her season with the second most assists tallied in the South Iowa Cedar League conference with 64. In the SICL-East division, Goodwin finished in the top five of nine of the 17 total statistics: second in assists, second in three point percentage (32.4%), third in three pointers (45), fourth in points (302), fourth in steals (50), fourth in field goals made (95), fourth in free throws made (67), fourth in free throw percentage (65%) and fifth in blocks (26).

Goodwin spoke on the work that led to accomplishing this with, “I played travel basketball growing up. So, I know what it is like to play at higher levels of basketball. My mom (Head Coach Schay Moore) and I sat down before the season, and we set goals for myself and for the team. Being able to reach those was something I knew could happen, I just had to put the work in. The biggest thing I had to do this year was trust myself more. In years past, I was more timid. This year, trusting myself and being confident were big parts of my game.”

Goodwin has had the unique experience of having her mom be her head coach throughout the duration of her time as a Savages. She spoke of this experience with, “The first time I had my mom as my head coach was in the third grade. She was a 1,000 point scorer in high school, and played all four years at Central College. Being able to share the love of basketball is something really special to me. We knew our time was coming to an end, so we tried to soak up every moment, and it was really hard walking off the court with her in that final game.”

Not only did she compile all of these stats, Goodwin broke her season high in points against English Valleys with a 22 point scoring effort. She then broke that record a week later with 26 points in the win over HLV. This all came amidst what became a 13 game win streak for the Savages, that propelled them to a SICL-East championship.

“I think we knew after last season, my  junior season, ended that this season would be a big one for us. Going into Christmas break, we knew we had to turn it up a notch. We came together as a team. I think that was a big thing this year. We were all like a close family, and that really helps working as a team. We were having fun in every single practice. We were having fun in games. If it wasn’t your night, you knew you had a teammate to pick you up. That is how it was the whole second half of the season, and that showed why we were so successful.”

Goodwin wrapped her season with an All Region, All-District and unanimous All-Conference Honors. On top of that, the Savages earned a SICL-East division title.
