SIGOURNEY—On June 5, the Sigourney Savages returned home after back to back away games with a conference matchup against the Montezuma Braves. The Savages stomped the Braves by a final score of 12-2.

The Savages started the game off red hot with seven runs in the first two innings. The highlight of the inning was a Caden Clarahan three run home run. Clarahan finished his day 3-4 with two singles, a home run and four RBIs. Freshman Lincoln Power also tallied three runs batted in off a single and double. Other Savages with RBIs were Isaac Bruns-2, Jake Moore-1, Reid Molyneux and Brady Clark-1.

Senior Reid Molyneux got the start on the bump for the Savages, and finished his day with three and two-thirds innings pitched, no earned runs on one hit and eight strikeouts. Molyneux faced 11 batters in his time pitched, and waved 73% of them.

Junior Brady Clark came in relief with two and one-thirds innings pitched, one earned run on one hit and two strikeouts.

Head Coach Lee Crawford spoke on his team’s mental toughness to get the win after two straight loses with, “They were loose in the beginning, but it is also about attention to detail. I spoke to Coach (Jared) Jensen (SK Football Head Coach) before the game about getting back on track after losing two straight games. He emphasized getting on the details and making sure you're doing everything correctly. Following our patterns and getting back to our routines. You know playing back at home, listening to our music and having fun. You could see the energy going through them.”

Junior Caden Clarahan has put together an impressive season so far for the Savages. In the entire State of Iowa, Clarahan is second in batting average (0.643) and third in on-base percentage (0.756). On top of that, he is in the top five of 10 separate statistics in the South Iowa Cedar League: first in batting average, first in on-base percentage, second in total-bases, second in slugging, tied for second in RBIs, tied for second in hits,, tied for third in home runs, tied for third in runs allowed as a pitcher, tied for fourth in strikeouts as a pitcher and tied for fourth in doubles.

Clarahan spoke on what has led to all the success at the plate with, “Hitting, I have just focused on mechanics. Not trying to kill the ball everywhere, just put the ball in play. That has been working out for me, and just going from there.”

He went on to describe the pitching side of his game as, “Just try to spot the ball a little more, place the ball a little more, like at Lynnville-Sully I had to throw some more junk because I knew their good hitters.”

The Savages push back into the win column, and are 8-2 with a conference record of 6-1. They will return to action on June 7, when they face a red-hot BGM team currently sits above them in the conference standings.
