Sigourney Girls Bounced by North Mahaska
NEW SHARON—The Sigourney Savages visited the North Mahaska Warhawks on February 14 for the second round of the Class 1A-Region 8. The Savages fell to the Warhawks by a final score of 68-47.
The Savages jumped out to a 22-18 lead after a quarter of play. The Warhawks responded with a 15-0 run in the second quarter to take a 33-22 lead heading into the half. The Warhawks kept up the momentum as they out-scored the Savages 35-25 in the second half en route to the 68-47 victory.
The Savages leading scorer on the night was junior Carly Goodwin with 15 points. Sophomore Joesphine Moore finished her night with nine points, nine rebounds and two steals. Senior Zoe Webb concluded her night with eight points that consisted of being a perfect 6/6 from the charity stripe.
Sigourney head coach Schay Moore spoke on the loss with, “I was very pleased with our effort. I felt the girls left everything they had on the court.”
She went on to describe the effort from her team to start the game with, “I knew one of the keys to the game would be handling their press, and we were able to do that. Ava Fisch knocked down some big 3s for us right away, and we were able to convert on our free throws after getting fouled which helped us get out to a great first quarter. Obviously though we had a big offensive let down in the 2nd quarter that really hurt us. They played some tough defense, and we had trouble adjusting to it. We came out and fought hard the 2nd 1/2, but it just wasn't enough. They shot the ball well, and are a really good team.”
Coach Moore went on to describe her last game with senior Rain Barthleman and Zoe Webb with, “Zoe and Rain will be missed. They provided us with some great leadership this year. They both led by example each night by giving it everything they had to the team.”
Lastly, coach Moore encapsulated the second half of the season with, “I was very pleased how well this team played after Christmas break. We had set goals before the season started, and were not where we wanted to be at 6-5. I challenged the girls, and let them know what we'd need to do to accomplish those goals, and they responded!! We went 10-3 after break and I felt we were playing some of our best basketball heading into tournament play. Our defense was our one constant this season, and I hope we can continue that next year.”
The Savages wrap up their season with a record of 13-9, and a conference record of 9-7.
