SIGOURNEY – Sigourney Elementary School held a Title I reading night on Feb. 27, featuring free books, a used book sale, door prizes, games, temporary tattoos, and hot dogs. The night also featured stands from local businesses and sign-ups for summer events. The goal of the night was to promote reading among local students.

“I think it’s a great way to get families in the building and I think it’s a great opportunity for parents to see what their kids are doing here at school,” said Elementary Principal Deanna Spence.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our kids to team up with businesses and organizations in Keokuk County and let them know all of the different resources and things that are available to the kids. It brings families together, they all get free books, they have activities to celebrate reading. Already we’ve had 200 kids come through out door, which is at least about 3/4s of our school, so it’s well attended,” said Reading Interventionist Jolie Crawford. “We just appreciate the families that bring their kids in and support the school. Title I sponsors it and one of the aspects of it is to bring the parents in and help them understand that reading is a vital part of their kids education and the support we get from parents is amazing. We get books in their hands. From Pre-K to 6th Grade, they all get a book. The used book sale is only 25 cents. Most kids, once they get books in their hands, they want to read. So,  I do think that it helps promote the growth of reading for the kids.”
