Last Friday, September 13, the Sigourney-Keota Cobras traveled to Wellman and spoiled Mid-Prairie’s Homecoming, coming from behind to defeat the Golden Hawks 21-14.

“I was proud to see the fight we had tonight,” said Cobra head coach Jared Jensen. “We kept battling and stayed on track. It showed we have a lot of confidence even when we get behind.”

After a scoreless first quarter, the Cobras got on the scoreboard with a two-yard touchdown run by sophomore Ike Molyneux, his first score of the season. A missed point after attempt made the score 6-0.

Late in the second quarter, Mid-Prairie used an interception to get a score of their own, giving them a 7-6 lead at halftime. Mid-Prairie extended the lead to 14-6 midway through the third quarter with an 86-yard touchdown pass.

The Cobras responded with one of their best drives of the season, capping it off with a two-yard touchdown run by senior Isaac Bruns. Trailing by two, junior Brayden Wood tied the game with a jump pass.

Both teams battled back and forth for the majority of the fourth quarter until the Cobra special teams made the play of the game. Senior Billie Kindred broke through the line during Mid-Prairie’s punt attempt and blocked it. Junior John Berg quickly recovered.

“That was a great play by Billie,” Jensen said. “We work on punt blocks each week and try to find different angles to attack.”

With momentum on their side, Sigourney-Keota crossed the goal line a few plays later when Bruns scored his second touchdown of the game. Bruns carried the ball 27 times for 116 yards and two scores. Ike Molyneux finished with 59 yards on ten carries with a touchdown.

The Cobras' defense had a performance Jensen was extremely proud of against a potentially potent Mid-Prairie offense.

“The defense played extremely well,” Jensen said. “We only gave up six first downs and did a great job containing a pretty good offense. We were great in coverage, and our rotation up front gave us that extra gear we needed.”

Leading the defense were Kindred and fellow senior Jace Chalupa, both with six tackles. Molyneux finished with five, while senior Kael O’Rourke had four.

Up next for Sigourney-Keota is Homecoming as they welcome Cardinal (0-3). Coach Jensen knows they are a young team but feels this is a great opportunity for growth as they begin District play.

“We’re going to focus on ourselves this week,” Jensen said. “Getting better every day in practice as we begin that long march into Districts.”
