Sigourney-Keota Earns Share of SICL Title
The Sigourney-Keota wrestling team earned a share of the SICL regular season championship last Thursday, January 19 when they defeated Belle Plaine 45-36.
“It always feels good winning a conference title,” said Sigourney-Keota head coach Corey Van Den Huevel. “Seeing our seniors get a win made it even better.”
Seniors Jack Clarahan (170 pounds), Austin Gorsh (120 pounds) and DJ Hammes (145 pounds) all picked up a win in their respective weight classes by pin. Dan McLaughlin earned a 10-6 decision in the 132-pound match.
Also earning wins for Sigourney-Keota were sophomores Austin Schwab and Reanah Utterback along with freshman Owen Menke, all via pin.
That wasn’t their only victory of the night, Sigourney-Keota also defeated Moravia 42-33 and HLV, 72-3.
Hammes, Schwab, Gorsh and McLaughlin all picked up victories by pin.
Against HLV, Sigourney-Keota earned ten victories by forfeit. Winning actual matches were Ashton Schwab and junior Carter Wyatt.
Two days after earning a piece of the conference crown, Sigourney-Keota competed in the North Tama Invitational and came home with a second place finish.
A total of seven teams competed in the tournaments and Sigourney-Keota’s second place came from a 158.5 point performance.
DJ Hammes and Reanah Utterback came away with first place finishes.
Hammes Picked up victories by pin in the first round and semifinals before winnin the 145-pound tournament with an 8-3 decision win. Utterback had a three person bracket and pinned both of her opponents.
Placing second in their weight classes was Brady Clark (126 pounds), Dan McLaughlin (132 pounds), Reid Molyneux (152 pounds), Ashton Schwab (160 pounds) and Jack Clarahan (170 pounds).
Next up for Sigourney-Keota is the SICL Tournament this Saturday, January 28 in Colfax.
