Sigourney Secures Senior Night Victory Over Iowa Valley
SIGOURNEY—On January 30, the Sigourney Savages girls’ basketball team hosted the Iowa Valley Tigers for a SICL conference matchup. The Savages stormed past the Tigers by a final score of 49-34.
After the game, Sigourney hosted a ceremony to celebrate the careers of Amiya Smallwood, Carly Goodwin, Olivia Hammes, Ava Fineran and Erin Dawson. Not only were the basketball players recognized, senior basketball cheerleader Krysta Seller was honored for her three years with the cheerleading team.
After the game, Goodwin, Smallwood, Dawson and Fineran were asked about the emotions of their senior night.
Goodwin responded with, “It’s honestly a really sad feeling, and something you can’t prepare yourself for. I think the way we all played together, and coming out with the win, meant a lot to us. It was really good to go out like that.”
Smallwood explained her perspective with, “I feel like we have watched all these seniors nights and been a part of them. When it’s finally us, it was a shocking feeling. It was definitely exciting going out there playing with each other, for each other and getting the win.”
Dawson described the raw emotion of the moment with, “It was kind of sad. Thinking about all the little kids games we have played in, and the big games we have played in together. I kind of wanted to cry, but I had to stay together to help get the win.”
Fineran shared the sentiment of, “It’s really crazy because this marks the halfway point. It is almost over. Things are coming to an end. We have played with each other since elementary school. It is just sad to think about the end of the bond we have created.”
The Savages stormed out to a 29-18 halftime lead behind nine points from senior guard Carly Goodwin.
The Savages cruised in the second half to the 49-34 victory. Goodwin led the team with 15 points. She also added four rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.
Over the past four games, Goodwin has averaged 16.5 points per game. She spoke on the hot shooting streak with, “It feels good, and obviously I couldn’t do it without my teammates. I think when anyone on the team has a good night it brings the whole team up with them.
The Savages push to 12-4 with a conference record of 6-4. They will return to action on February 1, when they visit the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks.
