KEOTA—The Sigourney Savages visited the Keota Eagles on May 24 for a South Iowa Cedar League matchup. The Savages bested the Eagles by a final score of 11-1.

The Savages started the game hot by plating seven runners in the first inning. The Eagles responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first inning. The Savages added four more runs in the top of the fourth en route to the 11-1 victory.

Sigourney’s Josephine Moore went four innings with no hits, no earned runs and 10 strikeouts.

The offense was sparked by freshman Kenzi VanDenHeuval, who knocked in four runs on two singles.

Sigourney head coach Shelly Streigle spoke on starting the season off with two straight wins with, “Wins always feel good. No matter what.”

The Savages were recently ranked sixth in the IGHSAU rankings for Class 1A. She went on to describe what she’s emphasized to her time since the ranking with, “I try to take the pressure off of being ranked, but at some point you have to embrace it. People are going to give you their best, so you need to come with you best.”

The Savages advance to 2-0 on the season, and will return to action on May 26, when they host the English Valleys Bears.

The Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season, and will return to action on May 26, when they visit the Tri-County Trojans.
