Sigourney Softball Secures 6-1 Win Over English Valleys
SIGOURNEY—On May 30, the Sigourney Savages hosted the English Valleys Bears for a SICL-East matchup. The Savages secured victory over English Valleys by a final score of 6-1.
The Savage offense was led by senior Carly Goodwin and eighth grader Ella Bruns. Both tallied two RBIs apiece. Bruns knocked in two runners on a bases loaded double.
Head Coach Shelly Streigle spoke on seeing her young players step up when given the opportunity as, “That is really exciting for everyone. They are excited when everyone has success. This team is unselfish, and they look forward to everybody’s success. I think everyone was happy for her.”
Carly Goodwin was lights out from the mound, finishing her day with seven innings pitched, one earned run on two hits and 18 strikeouts. Of the 24 batters she faced, 75% struck out.
The one run from the Bears came via a Taylor Mikesell homerun. Goodwin spoke on regaining her confidence after giving up the home run with, “Being a high velocity pitcher that if someone has a good swing and gets the barrel on it, it’s going to go. You have to give her credit for getting a good hit, but at the same time you have to bounce back and not let it bother you. I think I did a good job of not letting it bother me and just finished out the rest of the game.”
The Savages came into this game facing a red-hot English Valleys team that was undefeated. Coach Striegle spoke of the team’s mentality heading to the game as, “Just play our game. That is our focus at all times. Attack our pitches, move our feet and play good defense.”
The Savages push to 5-1 on the season, and will return to action on May 31, when they host the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks.
The English Valleys Bears fall to 5-1, and will return to action on May 31, when they visit the BGM Bears.
