MARION COUNTY – Kyle Burk, a 16-year-old Sigourney student, passed away on Jan. 24, after being struck by a car. According to a report by Iowa State Patrol, the vehicle Burk was riding in lost a tire while driving down Highway 92, near Knoxville. Burk attempted to cross the highway to retrieve the lost tire and was hit by another vehicle. Burk was taken to Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, then life flighted to Des Moines, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Sigourney School District has announced that counseling services will be available at the school this week. Classes will not be held on Thursday, Jan. 30. After school activities will still be held. The class of 2026 is selling t-shirts in honor of their classmate at Misc on Main; proceeds from the t-shirts will go to the Burk family to help pay for expenses.

“Losing a student is one of the hardest things we go through as an educator,” said Sigourney Jr/Sr High Principal Shannon Webb on Facebook. “As a school community, we are more than just teachers, students, and staff—we are a family. The loss of one of our own shakes us to our core. Kyle was one of those unique students who got along with all students. His personality could light up a room. Please keep our school family in your thoughts & prayers. Fly high Kyle!!!”
