NEWTON – The Sigourney-Keota high school boys’ and girls’ bowling teams travelled to Cardinal Lanes in Newton to take on Pella on January 11.

The girls continued their winning ways with an impressive 405 pin advantage over the Pella girls. Total pin count for SK was 2325 with Pella knocking down 1920. SK senior Jayden Montgomery claimed the girls’ meet high single game score of 214 with sophomore Sophie Young just one pin behind her. Jayden also claimed the girls meet high series of 410 followed by Sophie Young with a 372 series. Girls’ team members also adding to the SK pin total were Kaylie Montgomery (307), Addison Richardson (268), Calli McCoid (248), and Gracie Gillam (236).

Prep bowling rankings within the state are fluid throughout the season, however, as of this writing and with the girls’ win over Pella tallied, the SK girls are ranked number one in total pin count out of the eleven teams in the Two Rivers Bowling conference. The team is also ranked second out of the 54 teams in the entire state Class 1A for total pins.

SK’s seven-bowler girls’ team has four bowlers ranked in the top five out of the 314 Class 1A bowlers in the state. Jayden Montgomery is listed as first; Sophie Young is shown as second, and Kaylie Montgomery comes in at third. SK’s Addison Richardson claims the fifth spot. With four more competitions on the schedule before sub-state these girls are making history.

The SK boys’ varsity bowled well against Pella during the individual game portion of the meet. Brothers Wells and Owen Clark tied each other for the high game of the meet with each of them rolling a 235. Wells then pulled away from his younger brother to claim the meet’s high two-game series of 461. Senior Landyn Greiner rolled 398, Owen Clark finished with 395, Aidan Greiner added 358, Liam VanVoltenburg finished with 274 and Caden Meyer rolled 255.

At the conclusion of the individual portion of the meet, SK held a 115-pin lead over Pella before going into the five Baker games. SK began to anticipate another win, but the Pella boys’ squad had other ideas.

Pella came out of the chutes on fire and bowled the five Baker games with an average of just over 200 pins per game. That feat proved too much for SK’s bowlers, and they fell behind Pella to end the meet 23 pins shy of the win.

Even with this loss, the SK boys are highly ranked in Class 1A within the state. The SK boys are ranked fourth out of the 52 Class 1A teams in the state. Currently, out of the 358 Class 1A boys’ bowlers, Wells Clark, Owen Clark, and Landyn Greiner are ranked 1, 2, and 3 in total pins. Their high series scores are within 2 pins of each other.

Both teams will travel to Perfect Game in Ames on January 21 to face Ballard beginning at 2:30.
