SIGOURNEY – Soccer has the greatest number of participants of all youth sports in Sigourney. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic and the 2021 season is fast approaching.

Having been tabled during the Dec. 16, 2020 meeting, youth soccer was back on the agenda during the Jan. 6, 2021 Sigourney City Council meeting. Council members reviewed information published by Mayo Clinic on Dec. 10, 2020 regarding safe outdoor activities during COVID-19 and looked at what other communities across the country were doing concerning their youth soccer programs.

The Council also took note of current COVID cases in Keokuk County. According to online Iowa COVID-19 trackers for Keokuk County, the county’s active infections have steadily declined over the past month. On Dec. 9, 2020 the county saw a peak of 281 active cases. One month later, on Jan. 9, 2021 the county reported 74 active infections, indicating a less than .8% rate across the county’s population and representing a 74% drop.

Council Members voted unanimously to move forward with the 2021 spring youth soccer program.

All children from the Keokuk County School Districts who are at least 4 years old by April 1, 2021 and not older than sixth grade in the 2020/2021 school year are eligible to play. The season will begin on April 10, 2021 and is scheduled to run through Saturday May 15 with games scheduled at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon on Saturdays. Every effort will be made to complete the soccer season before baseball and softball begins to allow kids to play both sports.

Registration cost is $35 (checks payable to “City of Sigourney”). Registration forms are available at and can be dropped off at the City Clerk’s Office at 100 N. Main St.  Do NOT drop forms off at the schools. The form can also be found and printed at the City’s website at www.sigourney-iowa.com. Registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 5, 2021 at 4:30 p.m. If you have any further questions you may contact Alan Sellers, Soccer Director at 641-295-5180.

The middle school age soccer team, Sigourney Venom, will play through the Mahaska County Soccer Club (MCSC) and is available for students in seventh and eighth grades. The cost to play on the Sigourney Venom team is $65 if registered and paid by March 1. Uniforms will be provided. For a registration form or information on how to register online, or for any other questions you may contact Christie Iosbaker at ciosbaker@gmail.com or 641-569-0860.

A junior varsity co-ed soccer team is under consideration by the Sigourney School Board. At the December board meeting, a presentation was made asking for approval of a high school JV co-ed soccer team to begin with the Spring 2021 playing season.  At that time, the Board requested further information from school representatives concerning costs and viability to be presented at the Jan. 13 meeting. A final vote is expected that night.
