Wrestlers win meet, five go to state

Sigourney high wrestlers won the team championship of the class 2A district tournament here Saturday, and at the same time qualified five for the state tournament at Sea Moines, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week.

Jeff Peden, senior 138 pounds. Mike Greiner senior, 145 pound. Steve Sieren, senior, 126 pounds. Dan House, sophomore, 105 pounds and Kevin James, junior, 112 pounds.

 

Boys are undisputed Champs in Basketball

Sigourney high school boys beat Williamsburg 76-52 there Friday and claimed an undisputed South Iowa Cedar League basketball championship for the 19?? season. Sigourney's 14-2 league record betters by a half game the 13-3 record of the Iowa Valley Tigers, who finished in second place.

 

Tom Wilhite V.P. in Disney Productions

Tom Wilhite, son of Mr. and Mrs Norman Wilhite of Keswick was recently given recognition in the Des Moines Register for his accomplishments with Walt Disney productions of Burbank Calif.

After graduation from Tri-County Community High School in 1970 he attended Iowa State University in Ames where he graduated in 1974. In early college days he thought he might want to be a television anchorman. He wrote a letter to Groucho Marx asking him if he would consider coming to Iowa State to do a concert. Marx agreed to come. The event was a huge success and Wilhite got the credit. After catching Groucho's eye, and eventually working on the movie Rocky in 1976, the Disney People offered him a job as a publicity director in 1977 and he took it.

After a successful tour of the 50th anniversary of "Mickey Mouse", Ron Miller, Disney's son-in-law and now president of Disney Productions brought Tom over to productions and a series of promotions since has brought him at the age of 29 to the position of vice president of productions for motion pictures and television for Walt Disney Productions.

 

Mary Rider Named County Essay Winner

Mary Ryder of rural Gibson was named the Keokuk County winner in the Iowa farm bureau essay contest for high school students. Ryder, the 17 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Edmundson, topped 13 other students riding on the subject "Agriculture--Iowa's Heartbeat. As the Keokuk County winner, she received a $10 award and her essay will be entered in the state competition where the top prize is a $200 U.S. Savings Bond plus an expense paid trip to the American Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Conference.

The contest is designed to help tell the story of the Iowa farmer to an urban audience. Placing second in the contests was Terry Stringfellow, 15-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Richard Stringfellow of rural Gibson. Third place went to Tracy Hervey, 15-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Ray Hervey of rural What Cheer.

 

New Director at Haysville Bank

William C.Wilkening has begun duties as director of the haysville Savings Bank. He was elected by stockholders at the bank's annual meeting recently to take the place of his father R.D. Wilkening, who had served on the bank board of directors for the past 22 years. He is a farmer and C.J. Mertz, Bank president, States, "knowing the problems and needs of the area first hand he will be a great asset to our financial institution."
