Tri-County Topple Seymour in Play-In Game
SEYMOUR—The Tri-County Trojans opened up their postseason play with a play-in game matchup against the Seymour Warriors on the road. The Trojans secured their first win of the season in overtime by a final score of 69-52.
After a quarter of play, Seymour held a 13-12 lead over the Trojans. The Trojans stormed back in the second quarter by out-scoring the Warriors 20-9 to secure a 31-22 halftime lead.
Seymour retook the lead with a 20-8 third quarter, but the Trojans did not quit fighting. They tied the game up late in the fourth quarter with a miraculous three points shot from Levi Molyneux with under 10 second left in regulation, and decimated the Warriors in the overtime period to the tune of a 19-2 run to secure the 69-52 road victory.
Freshman Sean McCulloch and junior Levi Molyneux combined for 51 of the 69 Trojans points. McCulloch led the charge with 29 points off six three pointers. Molyneux filled out the stat sheet for the Trojans with 22 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and one block.
Tri-County Head Coach Dylan Spring spoke on the victory with, “It was a back and forth game all night. We got off to a slow start and were down by 2 points after the 1st quarter. But we had a huge 2nd quarter to take a 31-22 lead at halftime. The Warriors stormed back in the 3rd quarter to take a 42-39 lead into the 4th. The 4th quarter was once again a back and forth dog fight. But with 17 seconds left in the game, Levi Molyneux stole a pass at midcourt, dribbled down the court and launched a 3 pointer from deep to tie the game with under 10 seconds left in the 4th quarter. At the end of regulation, the score was 50-50. The Trojans outscored the Warriors 19-2 in the overtime period to claim a 69-52 victory (our first of the season). Sean led our team in overtime scoring 9 points!”
Coach Spring described what he relayed to his team heading into the overtime as, “The message was to play hard and smart. We had previously lost a game in overtime the past week at Moulton-Udell, and I challenged the boys to change the end result this time. They rebounded well, and played by far their best four minutes of the season!”
“It felt amazing. My boys battled back from adversity, and got the win. That was the most rewarding thing for me. It was not a perfect game at all but we never gave up and the end result speaks for itself,” described Coach Springer.
The Trojans advance to the first round of the IHSAA Substate 5: District 10 bracket, and will visit the top seeded Holy-Trinity Catholic Crusaders on February 12.
