Utterback moves to 39-0 with tournament wins at Waukee, Cascade
WAUKEE – It doesn’t seem to matter what kind of school they come from.
If they end up paired against Sigourney-Keota’s Reanah Utterback, there is a good chance they are going to end up pinned.
Last week the Sigourney-Keota girls wrestling teams wrestled in two different tournaments. One common theme was Utterback winning all of her matches.
On Saturday the Cobras competed against some of the largest schools in the state at the Northwest Invite. Utterback was able to win all three of her matches.
She started off with a quarterfinal win over a Waverly-Shell Rock opponent. She needed just 1:48 to earn the win.
In the semifinals Utterback pinned a Carroll wrestler in 2:51. That put Utterback in the championship.
There Utterback won via a second period pin over a Cedar Falls opponent.
Thursday night the Cobras were in Cascade.
Utterback started that tournament with a win in the quarterfinals over a Wilton opponent in just 43 seconds.
In the semifinals Utterback pinned a Oelwein opponent in 66 seconds.
The longest match, so far, of the year for Utterback came in the championship where Utterback pinned an Don Bosco opponent late in the third period.
The Sigourney-Keota wrestlers had a decent night at the Cascade tournament.
Kia Montgomery would place second in the 130-pound bracket. Montgomery won her first match with a second period pin. In the semifinals Montgomery won over a West Liberty opponent in the second period.
In the championship match Montgomery was pinned late in the first period.
Sadie Clarahan would place fifth in the tournament.
Clarahan wrestled in the 125-pound bracket. She won her first match with a 40 second pin over a Wapello opponent.
After being pinned by an East Buchanan opponent in the quarterfinals, Clarahan would finish the tournament with three-straight wins. She pinned a West Liberty opponent in a minute. Then she earned a first period pin over a Bellevue opponent.
Clarahan then won the fifth place match with a third period pin.
At the Waukee tournament Clarahan placed eighth overall.
Clarahan started off with a win over a Carroll wrestler. After falling via tech fall in the quarterfinals, Clarahan was able to earn a tech fall win over a Williamsburg opponent.
In the consolation semifinals Clarahan was defeated by a tech fall.
In the seventh place match Clarahan battled a Cedar Falls opponent. Both wrestlers finished the six period match with three points. In overtime the Cedar Falls opponent took the win 5-3.
In the 130-pound bracket Kia Montgomery placed eighth overall.
Montgomery started off the tournament with a defeat by tech fall. Montgomery would then win her first consolation match by a first period pin. Unfortunately after that match Montgomery suffered an injury and had to withdraw from the rest of the tournament.
