Officers respond to shots fired in What Cheer

On Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at about 2:00 AM the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shots fired call in What Cheer. Deputies learned the victim was in her pickup when a male suspect fired 5 close range shotgun rounds at her. The victim stated the male got back into his vehicle and fled the location.

Upon further investigation prior to the shooting the same male suspect and 3 female suspects had forced their way into a home in What Cheer with a firearm.

The investigation led officers to Harvey which is located in Marion County. The suspects led officers on a short chase before stopping and fleeing on foot. Officers were able to apprehend all 4 suspects without incident.

After the execution of several search warrants officers recovered 2 shotguns, 1 rifle, 2 handguns, drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Taylor Stilley, age 26, of Albia was arrested on an outstanding federal warrant and has been charged with Attempt to Commit Murder, Class “B” Felony, and Burglary 1st Degree, a Class “B” Felony.

Kearstan Schmidt, age 20, of What Cheer, was arrested and charged with Burglary 1st Degree, a Class “B” Felony.

Mersadie Little, age 18, of Oskaloosa, was arrested and charged with Burglary 1st Degree, a Class “B” Felony.

Tiana Stilley, age 17, of Albia, was arrested and charged with Burglary 1st Degree, a Class “B” Felony.

The male suspect was transported and is being held in federal custody. All three females were transported to the Keokuk County Jail and are being held on bond. The Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Southeast Iowa Drug Task Force and the Iowa State Patrol.
