Sigourney Survives 11 Minute Scoring Drought
In this year’s Backyard Brawl, Sigourney won 40-37. Sigourney improved their record to 8-3 while Pekin dropped below .500 on the season with a 5-6 record.
The first three minutes of the first quarter was all Sigourney, as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead. However, the remainder of the quarter saw Pekin go on a 10-0 run thanks to two 3-pointers by Sophie Wittrock.
The second quarter was all Sigourney, as they went up 27-14 at half. 12 of Sigourney’s 20 points game from senior Kaylee Weber.
Joselyn Abell added eight points in the third quarter while her teammates added five more to put Sigourney up 40-27, but that would be the end of the scoring for the Savages.
As the fourth quarter was coming up on all zeroes, Sigourney was fouled often but missed multiple 1-and-1 free throw attempts giving the ball back to Pekin.
“The game with Sigourney was exciting. Having to sit Kerrigan most of the first half hurt. We had no answer for Sigourney’s post girls,” Coach Eidahl said.
The game could have been sealed with a Rain Barthelman free throw with 4.7 seconds left, but the free throw woes continued and Erika Coleman had a chance to make a tying three pointer, but it missed.
“I give the girls credit for fighting back the way they did,” Eidahl said about his Lady Panthers.
