Sigourney Wrestling Wrap Up

The Savages celebrate Jacob Moore's 6-4 sudden victory win last Thursday, Jan. 7.

The Sigourney Savage wrestling team hit the mat for the first time in 2021 last Thursday, Jan. 7 when they hosted a trio of teams.

Joining the Sigourney were North Mahaska, Iowa Valley and Columbus Community High School.

The Savages earned victories in two of their three duals defeating Columbus 42-33 and North Mahaska 37-29 but lost a back-and-forth contest with Iowa Valley 34-33.

Their success in their first competition of the new year had head coach Corey VanDenHeuvel optimistic for what’s to come.

“Our performance Thursday was well received. It was better by leaps and bounds from before Christmas,” VanDenHeuvel said. “The kids have been excited and working hard in practice and that really showed Thursday night.”

In the first duel of the night, Jacob Moore found himself in a tight contest with Rementon Smithson of Iowa Valley.

Tied 4-4 at the end of the third period, Moore scored a takedown to earn the 6-4 victory, a victory that elicited a raucous celebration from his teammates.

“Jacob has really turned a corner since Christmas,” VanDenHeuvel said. “He came through huge for us in a tough match, I couldn’t be prouder of his effort.”

Joining him with victories against Iowa Valley was Daniel McLaughlin, Reid Molyneux, Jack Clarahan and Cade Streigle all of which pinned their Iowa Valley opponents.

Evan Dawson earned an 8-4 victory while Aidan Schuster picked up a 6-3 win in his match.

Dual number two for Sigourney saw them take on North Mahaska. Highlighting this duel was a victory by Reid Molyneux.

Trailing 7-4 in the final period, Molyneux battled back to pick up the victory by pin in the final minute of the third period.

“There is no quit in Reid, he’s got that fire in his gut,” VanDenHeuvel said. “He was in a tough position and was able to fight out of it, it was really impressive.”

Also earning victories against the Warhawks was Daniel McLaughlin (Pin), Evan Dawson (12-9) and Cade Molyneux (8-0 Major Decision).

Jack Clarahan, one of the Savages returning State Qualifiers from last season earned his second pin of the night during the final dual against Columbus. Also earning victories by pin were Cade Streigle, Aidan Schuster, Evan Dawson and Jacob Moore.

Clarahan continued his winning ways this past Saturday when he finished in first place of the 160-pound division during the Ottumwa Invite. He picked up four victories by pin on his way to first place.

Cade Streigle finished in third place of the 195-pound division while Cade Molyneux placed fifth at 170 pounds and Evan Dawson finished sixth at 145 pounds.

Next up is a road duel at Lynnville-Sully on Thursday, Jan. 14.
