Sigourney Girls Claim Regional Opener: Moore Advances in Regional Golf

NORTH ENGLISH – Sigourney girls left little doubt they want to reach the state golf tourney. Sigourney placed five golfers in the top seven en route to a 402 in the Class 1A Region 5B tourney Monday. Colfax-Mingo was a distant second with a 437.

North Mahaska senior Macy Moore will join Sigourney and play for a spot in the state Class 1A girl’s golf tournament as an individual next Monday. Moore carded a 95 to earn runner up honors at Knoll Ridge Golf Course in North English. Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully topped the field of 29 golfers with a round of 79.

Sigourney took the top team spot with team members finishing third through seventh. Colfax-Mingo also moved on as a team firing a 437. Lynnville-Sully was third with a 450.

English Valleys was the host school for the meet.

Madelynn Hornback took third with a 95 followed by Sidney Morse (98), Claire Svenby (98) and Maizy Cowman and Lily Schmidt each shooting 105.

Qualifiers will play in the regional final tourney at Prairie Knolls in New Sharon on Monday. May 24. Golfers from Class 1A Regional 5A and 5C in New London and Pleasantville will make up the field at New Sharon.

North Mahaska’s other two golfers, Ronni Layman and Libby Groom, placed 18th and 19th respectively. Layman shot a 119 and Groom shot 120.
