Bernardine Marie Shimek, 100, passed away Oct. 27, 2021, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Bernardine was born in Clear Creek Township in Keokuk County on Dec. 30, 1920 to Pete and Clara (Ott) Bombei. Bernardine married Frank J. Shimek on Oct. 17, 1947 in Las Vegas. They made their home in Burlington, Iowa for many years and they both worked at the Iowa Ammunition Plant in Burlington.

Bernardine enjoyed embroidery and knitting and did many beautiful projects. She also made many hand-made quilts and shared them with the people she loved.

She is survived by a sister Phyllis Hammes of Sigourney, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Alvin Bombei, and a sister Vernetta Armstrong.

According to her wishes no services will be held. She has donated her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific research.
