SUSAN KAY JOHNSON

1949-2021

SIGOURNEY-Susan Kay Johnson, 72, of Sigourney, died at 11:15 p.m. Dec. 6, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.

She was born Jan. 8, 1949 in St. Paul, Minn. to Arthur Birtil and Arline Helen Johnson.

Susan was a 1967 graduate of Mound High School in Mound, Minn. and Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Monn. She attended Northeast Missouri State College working toward a Master’s Degree.

Susan taught music in the Edina Missouri school system K-12. She then was an elementary music teacher and taught piano in Sigourney for 27 years, retiring in 2011.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa, where she played the organ and was director of music for over 45 years. She participated in the Southeast Iowa Choral Director Association, participated in GOVAP, lead workshops and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving is her brother, Mark Johnson (Lissa) Rurik of Minnetonka, Minn; nephew and Godson, William Rurik; niece, Lauren Rurik; godchildren, Grady Guenther of Burlington and Hanna Guenther-Summers of Ottumwa; special friends, Jeff and Debbie Guenther.

She was preceded in death by her parents; aunts and uncles and special aunts, Aunt Miriam and Aunt Jessie.

Her body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17 at First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. For those unable to attend, you may watch the service live on the First Lutheran Church Facebook page. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church. Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
