Sigourney Softball Secures Fourth Straight Win

THORNBURG—On May 30, the Tri-County Trojans hosted theSigourney Savages for a South Iowa Cedar League. The Savages bested the Trojans by a final score of 12-1. 

The Savages etched out a 3-0 lead by the conclusion of the first inning. The Trojans responded with a Peyton Icenbice double that plated Alyssa Conrad to cut the Savage lead to 3-1.

The Savages responded with an Ava Fisch double in the top of the fourth, which brought home Amiya Smallwood from second. Fisch has been red hot to start the season. She is currently batting .700 from behind the plate with six runs batted in. Of her 10 plate appearances, she has only gotten out three times, while also drawing five walks. Fisch spoke on the success she’s had with, “I just go up there without thinking too much about it. Being first off I can’t think too much about it. The more I think the more I get down, so I get up there and watch the ball.”   

She went on to speak about what it means to be the leadoff hitter with, “I like leading the team off to get a good start, and it keeps everyone else up.”

In the top of the fifth, the Savages offense exploded with an eight run inning. Sigourney head coach spoke on the big fifth inning with, “Delanie (Little) did a great job. She was jamming us, and we weren't getting our arms extended. I just got them backed up a little bit, and had them attacking a little earlier, so they can get out in front and see the ball better.”

The Savages had four players hit multiple RBIs on the day: Ava Fisch, Josephine Moore, Courtney Hemsley and Macy Fisch.

Carly Goodwin went five innings deep, while only giving up one earned run on three hits. She totaled 14 strikeouts on the day, and many of them were swings and misses. Goodwin had spoken about how she wanted to use her offspeed pitches to keep batters guessing, and it came to fruition in this game. She explained her thought process from the bump with, “When I throw upper 60s fastball, get them seeing it then climb the ladder with the rise ball and hit them with a low outside changeup. It keeps them off balance.” Not only has she been working on her offspeed pitches during the offseason, Goodwin seems to have added some MPH to her already incredible fastball. She explained that she has been, “Doing a lot of drills in the offseason. I’ve really been focusing on my lower half, and engaging it. It’s definitely shown.”

Not only has Goodwin been throwing gas from the mound, she’s been delivering from the plate as well. She is currently hitting 0.571 with seven runs batted in. Goodwin spoke on her success from behind the plate with, “I think I am going up there with more confidence. My team has been scoring a lot of runs, so you can relax more at the plate. I think it’s easy to have fun and see the ball more, when your teammates are providing for you.”

The Savages advance to 4-0 on the season, and will return to action on May 31, when they host the Iowa Valley Tigers.

The Trojans fall to 2-2 on the season, and will return to action on May 31, when they host the Belle Plaine Plainsmen.
