Goodwin and Moore Earn All-District and All-State Honors

The deadly duo of the South Iowa Cedar League earned high recognition for their immensely successful seasons. Carly Goodwin and Josephine Moore dominated their conference all season long to the tune of ERAs of 0.19 and 2.19, which were the two lowest earned runs averages in the conference. Both were also lights out from behind the plate. Goodwin batted 0.433 with 41 RBIs, while Moore hit 0.460 with 42 runs batted in. 

Goodwin spoke on the relationship that the two share with, “Josephine has caught mostly all my lessons in the off season, so she sees how I work and when certain things happen, she knows what to do! It’s an awesome thing to have. Plus we work together in every sport we do together such as basketball. The point guard and post connection! It’s just really special to be able to have someone that close as your catcher, and it makes things work out a lot better.”

Goodwin described what it means to represent her community as one of the best pitchers in the state of Iowa with, “It means something special for sure. I’ve been playing for Sigourney since I was 4 years old, and I’ve been trying to improve each year and make a name for myself. It means a lot knowing I have the support from the town as well, just knowing that they are proud of us as a team.”

Goodwin finished her season with career highs in ERA and strikeouts. Her ERA of 0.19 was the lowest in the state of Iowa, regardless of class. Her 325 strikeouts was the second most in the state, despite having 51.1 less innings pitched than the leader Dakota Lake. Goodwin also led the state in three other statistics: earned runs allowed with four, opponent batting average with a 0.080 and walks and hits per innings pitched with a 0.33.

Goodwin spoke on what helped her achieve this spectacular season with, “I spent a lot more time in the off season focusing on my mechanics and different pitches. It really helped me be able to throw those pitches in any count to any batter, but Josephine does a great job calling pitches, and we work together really well trying to get the right pitch for that batter!”

Goodwin is not done yet. She wants to continue to improve upon her performance from last year. The way she plans on doing that is, “Just using this fall to get more innings pitching for a travel team, while also tuning up mechanics as well. Starting in January I’ll do pitching lessons 2/3 times a week getting ready for the upcoming season and really working on things. I know that I have to keep progressing and never feel satisfied with it! The goal is to make it back to the state tournament next season, but we have to take it step by step!”

Josephine Moore also had a career season, as she finished up with a batting average of 0.460 and 42 runs batted in, which were both career highs. She was also patient from the plate all year, as she drew a career high 17 walks through the course of the season. Moore described the feeling of having a career year with, “I am very proud of myself and how I have come along this season. I have worked and practiced every day with my dad, whether it was hitting, pitching or catching. We put in a lot of work this season.”

When asked about her relationship with Carly (Goodwin), Moore responded with, “We have a very good connection with being cousins. We work really well together. I wouldn’t have my goals without Carly, and Carly wouldn’t have her goals without me. We just connect in good ways.”

Moore went on to describe the highs and lows of the season with, “The highs were that we were a really tight knit team, and we played really well together. I think us being really close helped us throughout the season. Our lows were when we had bad innings, we would just make up for it on defense or offense.”

Moore also led all of Class 1A in total chances with 339 and put outs with 327. She also finished in the top five in all classes for both of these statistics. 

Moore described what she wants to work on during the offseason, when she emphasized, “Working hard. The team put in the work in spring, and I think that really helped. So, probably doing that again to make us better. Also, going back to the state tournament. I really want to go back.”

Goodwin and Moore will look to replicate the spectacular seasons, when they return for the 2024 softball season.
