Goodwin, Moore and Hall Hit Milestones as Sigourney Girls Beat HLV

SIGOURNEY—On February 2, the Sigourney Savages hosted the HLV Warriors for a SICL matchup. The Savages stormed past the Warriors by a final score of 62-45.

The first quarter marked a historic moment for junior Josephine Moore. Moore grabbed her 500th rebound in a Savage uniform. She would go on to finish her night with a team high 14 rebounds.

The first half was all Savages, as they stormed out to a 29-16 lead. They kept the momentum in the second half, as they out-scored the Warriors 33-29 en route to the victory.

Senior Carly Goowdin once again put on a scoring clinic, as she finished with a career high of 26 points. Goodwin has been on a tear as of recently, as she had averaged 16.4 points per game in the Savages eight game win streak. 

The Savages have now pushed to a tie with English Valleys at the top of the SICL East standings with a conference record of 8-4. They hold the tie-breaker over the Bears, as they won both regular season matches. 

For the HLV team, there are four players on the girls’ roster that have come over from Tri-County high school: Ayla Hall, Aaliyah Cooper, Sienna Molyneux and Emery Hall. 

Tri-County junior Ayla Hall hit the 200 point mark on the season, as she tallied 18 points for the Warriors. Hall spoke on the accomplishment with, “It feels nice. It’s a huge accomplishment for myself.”

When asked about her transition to playing for HLV, Hall responded with, “The team is very nice and welcoming. The coaches, teammates, staff and parents have all welcomed us.”

The transition to playing for a whole new team, and program, can be daunting, but the Trojans found comfort in being able to lean on one another during this transition. “It was a little nerve racking when it was just Emery (Hall) and myself. When they (Aaliyah Cooper and Sienna Molyneux) decided to join us, it felt nice to have some more people come with us.”

Tri-County junior Aaliyah Cooper shared a similar sentiment to Hall about the experience with, “At first it was nerve racking because I did not know anyone on the team. Going to practice and being with them was a great opportunity, and it is kind of sad that the season is ending now. I am really grateful to have them as teammates. The coaches were so great to me, and inspired me a lot.”

When asked about being able to continue to play with her Tri-County teammates, Cooper replied with, “I was glad I could still play with Ayla (Hall), since we played together in track for Tri-County. I am also glad that Emery (Hall) and Sienna (Molyneux) came out because I know they were on the fence about playing.”

The Savages push to 14-4 on the season with a conference record of 8-4. They will return to action on February 3, when they visit the Belle Plaine Plainsmen.

Addendum: The Savages pushed their win streak to nine games with a win over Belle Plaine by a final score of 57-26. The Savages now have sole possession of first place in the SICL-East standings.
