SIGOURNEY—On May 22, the #2 ranked Sigourney Savages kicked off their home opener with a 12-0 victory over the Keota Eagles.

The Savages tallied six runs in the first inning with Josephine Moore, Carly Goodwin, Amiya Smallwood, Dani Aller and Ava Fisch all securing RBIs.

The Savages added two more runs with a ground-out from Dani Aller. Aller finished tied for a team high three RBIs. Carly Goodwin also secured three RBIs for the Savages.

After the game Dani Aller spoke on the performance with, “Feels good. It is a big change for me because I was in the outfield and now I am in the infield. So, being able to step up feels really good.”

Sigourney Head Coach Shelly Streigle spoke on Aller rising to the occasion with, “She has been stepping up in practice, she stepped up Monday at Belle Plaine and it was continuant tonight. Switching positions is hard, and she has taken it under the belt and is doing whatever she can for the team.”

Carly Goodwin spoke on her day at the plate with, “I think we were just attacking early, not trying to get behind in the count. I think the whole team did a good job at picking out our pitches.”

On the bump, Goodwin shined once again with only a hit given up in three innings pitched and tallying nine strikeouts.

She described the mechanics she has worked on this offseason as, “This offseason I worked on my drop ball and my rise ball. I just wanted to get more comfortable being able to use those pitches in any count.”

One of the points of emphasis for the Savages coming into the season was togetherness. Coach Striegle has been working on team bonding since day one. “We are working a lot on team building. This year I have been working on getting everything to gel together, especially with losing three seniors from last year, and we will have to continue to do that next year. It is exciting to work that way.”

The Savages start the season with back to back victories, and will return to action on May 24, when they host the English Valleys Bears.

The Eagles fall to 0-1 on the season, and will return to action on May 24 when they visit the Iowa Valley Tigers.
