Savages Storm Past BGM Bears by Final Score of 11-2

BROOKLYN—On June 7, the Sigourney Savages visited the BGM Bears for a SICL Conference matchup. The Savages bestest the Bears by a final score of 10-2.

After three innings, the Savages held onto a 4-2 lead. Senior Reid Molyneux stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. Molyneux ripped a bases clearing double and push the Savage lead to 7-2. 

The Savages would extend their lead to 10-2 in the top of the sixth with three runners being walked in. The Savages would hold onto this lead en route to the victory over BGM.

Freshman Chase Clarahan got the start for the Savages, and finished his day with three and two-thirds innings pitched, one earned run on one hit, six walks and seven strikeouts. Sophomore Solon Yates came in relief with three and one-thirds innings pitched with no earned runs on one hit.

After the game, senior captains Jake Moore and Reid Molyneux spoke about the team getting back to winning after two straight losses. Molyneux started with, “The Lynnville game was just a tough loss. We knew it was going to be a good game. Those close games fizzle things out, and I think that is what happened to Alburnette. We just grouped and recouped. I think that’s all we need and that showed today.”

Moore shared a similar sentiment with, “We didn’t dwell on our losses. We knew we had to move on with two conference games. We knew we needed to show up and play.”

Moore and Molyneux both had impressive pitched performances these past two weeks. Moore pitched a one hitter with eight strikeouts in the win over English Valleys, and Molyneux pitched three and two thirds innings with no earned runs on one hit and eight strikeouts against Montezuma.

When asked about their mentality heading onto the mound, Moore responded with, “When I am up there, I know my defense has my back. I just try to throw strikes. I try to strike them out, but I know my defense has my back if they do make contact.”

Molyneux responded with, “I get up there, and try to do good for my team. They can’t do anything if I am walking everybody, so the biggest thing is to get it in there. Just like Jake said, whether they hit or not, just throw strikes.”

Lastly, the senior captains were asked about the prospect of heading to the state meet. “That is the goal in any sport you play. That is the ultimate goal, the top,” explained Jake Moore.

Reid Molyneux shared a similar sentiment with, “We have been pretty close. Always one game away. It’s a pretty bad feeling afterwards. If we could get there, and pull through that would be great.”
