American Legion Donates to Quilters
SIGOURNEY – The Sigourney American Legion Post #19 donated $1,000 each to the Sigourney quilting group Hearts and Hands Quilters and the Hayesville quilting group Quilty Pleasures. Both groups make Quilts of Valor, handmade quilts given to veterans as a show of thanks. The donated money will go towards the costs of making new quilts.
“My husband was a veteran and I just thought, okay, all the older ones, they need to be recognized,” said Hearts and Hands quilter Donna Harms. “And I just like doing it.”
“I enjoy quilting, and that’s my way of honoring the veterans of our country,” said Hearts and Hands quilter Linda Lane. “My husband is a veteran. He was in the service for almost thirty years, so it means a lot to me. We honor those. My father was a veteran. So was my grandfather. You just kinda pass it down to the next generation.”
“(We’re giving) in appreciation for what they do,” said Sigourney American Legion Commander Jimmy Morlan. “The money’s coming out of their own pocket, this is to kind of reimburse some of those expenses. It won’t cover all of it, but it helps. I know my family, a lot of veterans in my family. Grandfather in World War I, my dad in World War II. My son was in the army also and I have a couple of nieces and nephews that had been in the service. It’s just all the way through the whole family, a lot of military.”
