Locals Win Ribbons and Championships at State Fair

DES MOINES – The 2024 Iowa State Fair, lasting from Aug. 8 to Aug. 18, drew in massive crowds, with total attendance of 1,182,682. Multiple locals managed to become state champions at the fair.

 

FFA Champions

Kaeley Axmear of the English Valleys FFA was the Tamworth Market Swine Reserve Champion.

 

Derek Bohrn of Pekin FFA was the Swine Carcass Group of 4 Champion.

 

Ayla Hall of the Tri-County FFA was the Gladiola Champion.

 

Ella Greiner of the Keota FFA was the Light Weight Market Lamb Reserve Champion, the Market Ewe Champion, and the Medium Weight Market Lamb Champion.

 

Hailey Pedrick of the Pekin FFA was the Carcass Lamb Reserve Champion.

 

The Keota FFA were the Large Group Sheep Herding Champions, the Large Group Swine Herding Champions, and tied for the third place Chapter Award.

 

Chloe Zittergruen of Tri-County FFA was the Dahlia Champion, the Reserve Gladiola Champion, Zinnia Champion, and won the Floriculture Award of Excellence.

 

4H Livestock Ribbons

Keswick Klover Leaves

Naomi Wadsowrth received two Blue and a Purple in Dog Obedience and Handling.

 

Lafayette Feeders

Lucas Menke received three Blue in Swine.

 

Isaac Striegel received three Blue in Sheep.

 

Liberty Leaders

Edie Axmear received a White and two Purples in Horse.

 

Layken Lee received three Purples and was the Int. Showmanship Res. Champion (Gr. 7-8) in Goats; and received two Blue in Sheep.

 

Trig Lee received three Purples and a Blue in Goats.

 

Patriotic Panthers

Ella Bruns received a Purple, a Red, and was the Western Walk/Trot Reserve Champion (Grade 8).

 

Sawyer Cason received a Blue in Beef Gamble Fry received two Blue in Swine.

 

Colt Reed received three Purple and seven Blue in Swine.

 

Colten Voyles received a Blue in Poultry; and received five Blue in Sheep.

 

Riverside

Izzy Heisdorffer received six Purples, one Blue, 7th Showmanship Honorable Mention, was the Speckled Face Commercial Ewe Champion, and was the White Face Influence Market Lamb Reserve Champion in Sheep; and received one Purple and one Blue in Goats.

Gamble Fry received two Blue in swine.

 

Madison Fry received five Blue in Swine.

 

Kaylee Lacey received a Red, Purple, and Blue in Horse.

 

Jayde Snakenberg received a Purple and two Blue in Dog Obedience and Handling.

Brooks Clarahan received a Seal of Excellence in Educational Presentations.

 

Mason Clarahan received two Blue in Visual Arts.

 

Tierney Greiner and Kearney Greiner received a Seal of Merit in Educational Presentations.

Finley Archenbach received a Blue in Sewing and Needle Arts.

Isaac Dehne received a Blue and the International Harvester (IH) Collectors Club Award in Science, Engineering & Technology.

 

Neela Thompson received a Blue in Horticulture and Plant Science.

Kensley Walker received a Blue in Sewing and Needle Arts.

Izaiah Arduser of Sigourney placed third in the First/Second Grade Spelling Bee.

 

Larry Gale-Sanders of Keota won the Hairiest Legs Competition.

 

David Nieuwsma of Sigounrey placed first in Dollhouse <1 inch scale and second in Celebration of Iowa Agriculture in the Miniatures contest.

 

Sam Hall, of Ollie, placed second in the Youth Cookout Contest.

 

Shirley Holm, of Sigourney, placed first in Shell Bark Hickory Nut.

 

Shelby Adam of Richland placed first in Open-Pollinated Single Ear Corn, first in Ornamental Corn, and third in Hybrid Commercial or Open-Pollinated, Longest Ear Corn.

 

Aaron Adam of Richland placed second in New Crop Hybrid Commercial, Yellow Corn.

 

Brian Shaull of Keswick placed third in Left Hand Fly Arm Wrestling.

 

Tom Cranston of Keswick competed in multiple daily Horseshoe competitions, placing first in the Farmer’s Championship, first in Open Singles (Class A) three times, second in Open Singles (Class A) once, third in Open Singles (Class A) twice, and fourth in the Men's Championship (Class B). Richard Cranston of Kewsick also competed in Horseshoes, placing fourth in the Farmers Championship Championship, third in the Farmers Championship (Class A), second in Midwest Senior (Class B), and sixth in Elders Championship (Class A). The Cranstons, along with Steve Miller of Wayland and Vern Kollasch of Iowa City, competed as the Southeast Iowa Mens’ Team at the Regional Team Championship, placing second. Tom Cranston and Ava Sinnott of Pella placed third in Open Doubles (Class A).
