Donald W. Long, 90
Donald W. Long, 90, of Rubio, died Wednesday September 4, 2024, at University Hospitals, in Iowa City. He was born on a farm near Lake Darling January 20, 1934, the son of Omer Daniel and Rachel Wealthy Rudolph Long. Don lived all his life in the Rubio area, attended Rubio grade school and graduated from Richland High School in 1952. He was drafted into the U. S. Navy where he became a hospital corpsman serving at Great Lakes Naval Station. He married JoAnn Sanders in Keota on July 5, 1959. He was a very talented man, holding many jobs including: farmer, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, Maytag in Amana, Rock Island Rail Road, Hadley Chevrolet, plumber, operated an upholstery shop, road construction, Confinement Specialists, and retired from Pekin Community School as a custodian. He loved music and ran the sound system at the Rubio Community Building Jam sessions for many years. He attended Rubio and Woolson Friends Church’s, where he was a Sunday School teacher, song leader and treasurer. He loved woodworking, attending Blue Grass Festivals, playing fast pitch softball as a pitcher, fishing and hunting. Don was always willing to lend a hand to help family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, children: Ron Long and Danita Yoder of Rubio, Denise and Brad Wildemuth of Davenport and David and Teresa Long of Rubio, 4 grandchildren: Erin Long, Alyssia Fisher, Rachel Wildemuth and Daniel Long, 2 great grandchildren: Tayla Fisher and Parker Long and his sister Violet Archer of Agency and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Virginia Hadley and 4 brothers: Lester, Arthur, Richard (Bill) and Howard.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday September 10, 2024, at Woolson Friends Church with Pastor Jerry Hoover officiating. Burial will follow at Clay Cemetery near Richland with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 504. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 P.M. Monday evening, at the church but the family will not be present. The family will plan to greet friends at the church Tuesday morning beginning at 10 A.M. Memorials to the Rubio Community Building, The Richland First Responders, or Woolson Friends Church Mission program may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 103 Prost Street, Rubio, Iowa 52585. Gould Funeral Home of Richland is in charge of arrangements.
