EDDYVILLE – The break didn’t seem to slow them down.

If the early indications are anything to judge, the holiday break only seemed to rejuvenate the Sigourney girls wrestling team.

They showed off how rested they were by bringing home plenty of hardware in a pair of tournaments this weekend.

Friday night at a tournament in Eddyville the Savages were able to bring home three medals out of the four girls that were wrestling.

“We had a very good and efficient break,” Sigourney-Keota girls wrestling coach, Trevor Weeks said. “We had a longer break than usual. I think we did more with our time and our team than most teams in southeast Iowa.”

Reanah Utterback would once again lead her team with a championship in the 115-pound bracket.

Utterback won her first match with a pin in 1:11. She then added a win by Tech Fall (17-2) in the quarterfinal round. In the semifinals Utterback needed just one minute and nine seconds to record a win by pin.

In the championship match Utterback was able to pin an EBF opponent in 1:18 to add another win to her stats.

Kia Montgomery would finish third in the 130-pound bracket. She was able to win her first round match with a pin in 38 seconds. After being pinned in the semifinals Montgomery was able to win the consolation semifinals with a pin in 1:32.

In the third place match Montgomery was able to pin her AP-GC opponent in the first period to finish third.

Sadie Clarahan was able to finish fourth in the 125-pound bracket.

Clarahan won her first match with a pin in 1:19. She then was pinned in the third period of the semifinals. Clarahan would rebound with a win by pin in the consolation semifinals.

After a tough battle in the third place match Clarahan was pinned late in the first period.

“Sometimes it is good to hear the same thing from a different voice,” Weeks said at Eddyville. “I think that is happening with Sadie and also a bit with Kia where they are getting told the same things that I tell them, but from other people.”

Madison Clarahan wrestled in the 190-pound bracket and was able to finish with an 0-2 record.

The next day the Savages added a wrestler and went on the road to Denver where they continued to cultivate success.

“We still have things to work on, and clean up leading to the district tournament at the end of the month,” Weeks said. “We got into the Denver tournament to make up for one that was canceled due to the ice storm last month. I am very grateful to Denver for letting us into their tournament on a short notice. It was nice to be able to see teams that we don't usually see, even nicer to pick up some head to head wins that can really help our seed at districts and the State tournament.”

The long night and day didn’t seem to slow down the Cobras as they once again brought home several medals.

“We brought home four medals, out of five entries,” Weeks said. “I believe that is a record for our team. We wrestled decently overall. Wrestling the next morning after getting home late from the Eddyville Tournament the night before was a lot to ask for.”

Once again Reanah Utterback was able to win her 115-pound bracket. Utterback started with a quarterfinal win, pinning her opponent late in the first period.

She moved into the semifinals where she pinned a Sumner-Fredericksburg wrestler late in the second period.

In the championship round Utterback was able to pin a Vinton-Shellsburg wrestler midway through the second period to earn her second-straight championship.

Sadie Clarahan would place third overall.

Wrestling in the 125-pound bracket, Clarahan started with a win by pin over a Charles City opponent. She then was defeated in a 5-3 decision in the semifinals.

In the consolation semifinals Clarahan was able to win by medical forfeit. She then pinned a North Fayette Valley opponent in the third place match.

Montgomery wrestled in the 130-pound bracket and finished fourth. She won her first match via a pin in the first period.

In the semifinals Montgomery was pinned in the first period, but she rebounded with a consolation semifinal win by a pin in the second period.

In the third place match Montgomery was pinned late in the second period.

Karley Greiner was able to finish fourth in the 170-pound bracket. Greiner started off by pinning her Alburnett opponent in the third period. Greiner was then pinned in the semifinal.

Greiner would then go on to pin a Waterloo West opponent in the third period. In the third place match Greiner was pinned in the first period.

Maddy Clarahan would finish seventh overall in the 190-pound bracket. Clarahan would go 3-2 overall in the tournament.
