Sigourney Girls Fall to No. 2 North Mahaska
NEW SHARON – Freshman Brynn Clarahan and senior Josephine Moore led a charge but could not overcome Class 2A No. 2 ranked North Mahaska Tuesday. The Lady Savages led the hosts four times but fell 59-44.
Clarahan scored a game-high 21points and six steals while Moore scored a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Sigourney coach Kaylee Weber thought her team’s game plan was good but North Mahaska had more weapons.
“They are a good team,” said Weber. “I thought we had scouted them pretty well and knew what they were going to do. I run a six to seven person rotation and sometimes we get tired. We play hard for three-and-a-half quarters.”
Nine of North Mahaska’s 15 turnovers came off of steals by Clarahan and Moore. The teams traded blows throughout the first half. Senior Ava Fisch drilled a 3-pointer with five seconds left in the first period to give the Lady Savages a 16-14 lead. Over the next minute NM regained the lead on three baskets to regain the lead 20-16. Moore hit a pair of shots to make the score 23-20 with 3:58 to play in the half.
Defense took over as neither team scored until the final 20 seconds. Sigourney did not score following Moore’s shot. North Mahaska’s Regan Grewe hit a bucket with 22 seconds to play for a 25-20 lead at intermission.
Midway through the third quarter Moore hit a pair of free throws and Clarahan hit a lane runner to take the lead 30-29. Sydney Andersen answered with a layup and two free throws. In the fourth quarter, Moore tied the game at 42-42 with 5:44 to play, but Sigourney could not get closer.
North Mahaska (9-1, 7-0) was led by Breckyn Schilling with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Andersen scored 12 with 11 rebounds. Grewe finished with 14 points.
Sigourney (6-4, 4-4) on Tuesday hosted Colfax-Mingo.
