Pekin girls survive scare from Fairfield
PACKWOOD – Although they led throughout the game it wasn’t a comfortable lead.
On Jan. 16 the Pekin girls basketball team downed Fairfield 46-41. For the Lady Panthers they were able to hang onto a narrow lead throughout the second half.
After leading by as much as 10 early on in the game the halftime lead dipped to seven points. Fairfield switched up their defense and played more of a full-court pressure defense which slowed the Panthers up for most of the second half. The lead dipped to just two points before Pekin broke through the full court pressure with quick passes and inside shots to help secure their lead.
Fairfield continued to battle back cutting the Panther lead to just two points by the end of the third quarter.
Pekin went into preserving mode throughout the fourth quarter as they took care of the ball. An early 4-0 run by the Panthers helped them secure their advantage, but Fairfield used outside shots to keep the Panthers from getting too comfortable with any lead.
Eventually Fairfield had to foul the Panther players and the Pekin shooters were able to build their lead up for the eventual five point win.
Abby Guise led the Lady Panthers with 15 points. Anna Hadley added 13 points. She also had 13 rebounds for a double-double. Renae Eubanks scored 10 points.
Maddy Petrehn added six points and Paislee Coleman scored two points in the win.
Overall the Panthers stand at 6-7 on the season.
